Thigh Lifts

Flankoplasty has its own risks and benefits.

Flankoplasty has its own risks and benefits.

Thigh lifts, also called flankoplasty, are one of the more popular types of plastic surgery for people who have lost massive amounts of weight in a short time frame. Most have undergone bariatric surgery or similar surgical weight loss procedures, and the excess skin seen through these treatments is nearly impossible to get rid of without additional surgical measures. Thigh lifts remove the excess skin at the thigh area, and they are often done at the same time as abdominoplasty or other types of liposuction in the trunk area.

This procedure can be painful to recover from, and, since it is nearly always combined with another procedure, can be somewhat expensive. In addition, it will have to be repeated on occasion, which can lead to horrible scarring if not done correctly. Patients must understand the potential risk of the fat accumulating again, and need to be aware of their commitment to at least attempting to maintain weight to even hope to allow the results of the procedure to last for any length of time.

Most patients choose flankoplasty only as a last resort. The first thought should be diet and exercise programs, and similar home-based non-invasive treatments that cost little or nothing but are effective. For some, body wraps and similar procedures work great and eliminate the need for more invasive surgeries. They cost much less, and have none of the horrible potential side effects that surgery offers.

Typical side effects possible include swelling, pain, soreness, tenderness, nausea, bruising, and vomiting. Most of these go away within two weeks. In addition, some patients have problems with infection, and this can be life threatening in some cases. It’s very important to speak with a licensed health care professional before choosing surgery. Always check the credentials of anyone you consider allowing to perform an invasive procedure, and understand the risks and potential benefits involved beforehand.

The After effects of a Botched Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck complications can kill you

Tummy tuck complications can kill you

For many people, a single factor causes them to think twice before undergoing a tummy tuck procedure, and that is botching. A botched tummy tuck is perhaps the single most frightening aspect that a prospective patient has to consider. Most surgeons do not guarantee aftereffects, especially the ones that know they are not as experienced, so you could find yourself short several thousand dollars. Even more devastating is that the patient winds up paying that astronomical figure for a bad result.

Botching describes negative after effects of a cosmetic procedure. This can occur for a wide variety of reasons, from lack of experience or skill on the surgeon’s part or due to a lack of proper preparation on the end of the patient. In other cases, the patient was not properly assessed for eligibility and their skin or body did not take well to the effects of the surgery, causing unsightly results. There are a wide array of effects that can occur due to a botched tummy tuck.

  • Loss or disfiguration of bellybutton. This is one of the most common fears expressed in regards to tummy tucks. “I’m afraid I’ll lose my bellybutton.” This takes place when the skin is not properly placed when the tummy tuck is performed. It can also be caused if some form of weight loss or fat reduction should have occurred prior to surgery. This can only be fixed with additional corrective surgery, which could mean that you end up doubling your investment.
  • Excessive, misplaced scarring. One of the techniques cosmetic surgeons are supposed to be very adept at is carefully placing incisions so that scars remain as inconspicuous as possible. Sadly, there are many cases where botched tummy tucks have included excessive scars, far larger than they were required to be. Another common effect is misplacement, where incisions are made in clearly visible spots. Most patients do not want to boast the fact that they underwent surgery to obtain their figure, and thus incision placement is paramount.
  • Nerve damage. During abdominoplasty, the skin and muscle tissues are separated, which means that the nerve endings are also being separated. Loss of feeling and nerve damage is common after a tummy tuck, but normally it returns after a few months’ time. Some botched cases have seen patients never fully regaining feeling in their incision area.

Botched tummy tucks are far too common for comfort, and can cause death in severe cases. If you’re considering abdominoplasty, be sure to thoroughly research your surgeon and the reviews of his/her work. A good, reputable surgeon should be more than happy to have a few consultations with you and thoroughly go over your risk factor for negative results.

Laser Liposuction

With interest rising in the market of non-invasive and non-surgical weight loss treatments, many new products and services are being released to the mass retail industry quite frequently. Laser liposuction is garnering great interest from the public with its promises of “melting” away fat in various regions of the body. Of course, nothing can literally melt away fat cells and it is an important fact for potential patients to remember.

spaliposuctionLaser liposuction is partially invasive and partially surgical. Incisions are required in order for the procedure to be performed, and although it by far a quicker process than traditional liposuction, minimal recovery time is required. Laser liposuction is normally performed under a local anesthetic, allowing the procedure to be classified as out-patient surgery.

Tumescent technology is still used in laser liposuction. The wetting solution helps to break down fat cells and deposits, making the procedure even more effective since the laser does the same thing. The cannula (suction tool) used during laser liposuction is smaller in diameter than in traditional liposuction, and only a very small percentage of the tissue removed is blood. Damage to organs and nerves is minimal with laser liposuction.

The heat generated from the laser used in the surgery melts the fat tissue after it has been semi-dissolved by the wetting solution. The excessive amounts of wetting solution, plus the liquid that is created by the laser heat is sucked out by the cannula. Scarring is minimal. The incisions are most often less than a single centimeter in length and are usually strategically placed in order to keep them out of sight as much as is possible. However, it is not designed to treat large scale zones such as the abdomen, thighs and buttocks. Laser liposuction is most effective in smaller zones, such as the upper arms, breasts, neck and face.

Because of the technology used, one can expect that laser liposuction will not be a low cost investment. The practitioners are specially trained, and their time is very valuable. Alongside the cost of time, one can expect to pay a certain amount in consultation fees, anesthesia, the cost of operating the technology used and there could be additional fees involved. Many laser liposuction clinics offer in-house financing options based on credit score.
